Why Aces Aren’t The Best

Many players get dealt pocket aces and think ‘Yes, woohoo, a great hand! I’m sure to win this round.’ New players fool themselves into thinking they are invincible, when in truth they aren’t. Most often then not they will raise and reraise before the flop, chunking the pot up nice and big.
Then the flop comes, 4-7-10 or something, and they haven’t hit. But they still have a ‘great pair’ so they continue, either raising or calling another raise. The game often plays out, the turn and river are random cards like 3 or 8 or whatever, the whole time the player thinking ‘But I’ve got a pair of ACES!!!’. Then they get destroyed at the showdown by a two pair of 4′s and 6′s or a lowcard trips or something.
Its Likely To Happen To You If You’re Not Careful

Now, don’t get me wrong, pocket aces are nice cards to get, I’d sure prefer them over a lot of other cards but the trick is not to let your head get too big over them. Yes they are great, yes all else being equal you are in the best position before the flop but be careful holding onto them after the flop, and turn.. and river.. if you haven’t really hit anything and things are looking risky. Showing up at the river with a pair probably isn’t the best idea. You might scoot by once or twice but I personally don’t rely on a pair to win me the game.
