If you want a fast and exciting game that allows you to look for new strategies and solutions, then playing Texas Hold Em Poker is for you. But to play this amazing game, you should first know the Texas Hold Em Poker Rules.

The Texas Hold Em Poker Rules – A Detailed Explanation Anyone Can Understand

The rules are accurate, clear and already very well established, so it is very easy to learn them. More good news is that these don’t change, so once you have learned them from reading this article in full you won’t have to continually learn them again to update your knowledge.

Ok, so first things first. The game has several basic elements:

  • the blinds
  • the dealer button
  • the pre-flop betting round
  • the flop
  • the post flop betting round
  • the turn
  • the post turn betting round
  • the river
  • the showdown
  • displaying and comparing the hands to decide the winner

Getting Setup And The Pre-Flop

We will begin with the blinds and button. The button is a disk that is placed in front of the player and shows who will be the dealer for the hand. This button moves one player to the left each round.

The blinds are forced bets. They are made by players before they get to see their cards, which means the players are playing “blind”. They are made by the two players located on the left side of the dealer button.

The first player to the left of the button is the small blind and the second player is the big blind. The big blind is equal to twice the amount of the small blind. Like I explained before, after each hand the button and both blinds move one place to the left.

The pre-flop is when players get dealt their pocket cards. These are two cards dealt face down that only that player gets to use. Then they must decide whether to play or fold.

The player must decide whether to remain inside or outside the hand and he shows his decision by making a bet when it comes to his turn or by refusing to bet and pushing his cards into the middle of the table and folding.

Tip: Don’t get confused with blackjack and poker. Waving your hand is done in blackjack yet isn’t used in poker. If you want to fold simply slide your cards away from you into the middle of the table.

The Betting Rounds

Betting occurs consistently: starting from the first player located to the left of the dealer button and continuing around the table in a clockwise direction. Each player is allowed to do the following:

  • to refuse to pay and fold
  • to match a former players bet by calling
  • or raise the bet

During the pre-flop betting round players who wish to remain in the hand must pay at least the big blind. In cases where the previous player has increased the stakes, every other player must pay the increased amount to remain in the hand – they have to match the raise. Of course, any player can always refuse to bet at any time and fold.

When the turn comes back to the player with the big blind, he is entitled to raise the bet if nobody did it before him. All sums paid by the players in the pot before the cards are dealt will be considered as part of their total bet. Following the announcement that all bets are finished the three cards of the flop are dealt.

The Community Cards

The Flop consists of three cards which are placed face up in the middle of the table. These are community cards and all players can use them to complete their hand. Again a betting round occurs, similar to the one described above.

Here, there is an additional move available – the check. This is a situation where there is no bet to pay but the player wants to continue to play. A player can check so long as no other player has bet before him.

After this round the next community card is dealt. The fourth card or the Turn is dealt face up in the middle of the table and is also a community card. And again it is time for betting. The active players who remain after this round of betting can see the last card.

The last community card dealt is the River. She is put with the other 4 cards on the table and now the players have all their possible cards for this round. The aim is to get the best poker hand with five cards of the seven available. Now it is the last round for betting.

Players who made it through to the end of the betting start the final stage of the game: displaying and comparing hands. The player who committed the last bet shows his cards first. And after this all other active players show their cards and broadcast the winner.

The winner is the player who has the best hand of five cards. If it happens that two players have identical hands, the profit is divided between them.
