The biggest NL Holdem Poker mistakes involve playing these toxic ‘death cards’. Are you inadvertently playing them? Read this article now to learn them.
The worst NL Holdem Poker mistakes usually have to do with playing the absolutely wrong cards (or at the wrong time). I’ve discovered some true ‘death cards’ which I would now never touch with a ten-foot pole. These are worse than even 7-2 unsuited. Check you aren’t playing them now.
NL Holdem Poker Mistakes – Death Cards #1
The first of the death cards are low or medium aces. Cards like A-7, A-5, A-4, A-2 etc. These cards, because of the ace, have the allure that they are strong when in fact they are quite weak.
For tight play, you really must have an A-10 or higher to for the ace-kicker to really be worth it.
NL Holdem Poker Mistakes – Death Cards #2
The second and probably the worst of the killer cards is the weak paint gappers. I’m talking stuff like Q-10, J-9 etc. These cards, because of the paint, seem like they are strong. Also because the cards are quite close it gives the illusion of straight possibilities, which although are there aren’t as good as connectors.
For tight play, you only even want to be playing these from absolute last position and that’s only really if you are going for a blind steal or need some action etc.
NL Holdem Poker Mistakes – Death Cards #3
The third and really bad killer cards, although less insidious, is low suited cards, eg. 4-6s, 5-8s, 7-10s. You can bundle connectors and gappers in here too if you are playing really solid tight play.
When people get suited cards they think they have a good hand because of the flush possibilities. The reality is that having two suited hole cards only actually increases your odds by 2%, which isn’t much.
Most of the strength of your cards is coming from the number/value of the card, that’s why high cards like aces and kings are so good.
