The pot is the prize money collected from the bets which the players have made. Hole or Pocket cards, collectively known as ‘Hand’, are individual cards given to players at the start of the game. These need to be dealt face down; if done otherwise, the cards need to be reshuffled and re-dealed.

Texas Hold Em Poker Rules For Beginners – Terminology

Community, Board or Shared cards are cards that can be used by any of the players to combine with their hole cards. These are drawn first in a set of three, called the flops then twice individually, called the turn and the river respectively.

Burn cards are cards that are discarded or unused in the game. These are cards taken at the top of the deck prior to taking the community cards to prevent cheating.

The object of the game is for players to choose the best hand by combining the hole cards and the community cards together.

Texas Hold Em Poker Rules For Beginners – The Rounds And Game Play

Texas Hold Em is divided into several betting rounds. The first round, also known as the pre flop is done with only the two hole cards. The next round is after the flops are drawn. The third round is when one more community card, ‘the turn’ is added and the last is when all five board cards or the river has been dealt.

When the dealer makes a mistake and the hole cards are given face up, the cards need to be reshuffled again. If the flops are dealt prior to pre-flop betting, or are drawn in excess, these cards must be discarded and used as burn cards.

However, an excess of more than one card will result in a misdeal which means that the cards must be reshuffled yet again.
