If you don’t know these Holdem Tactics you will surely lose at Texas Hold Em. But not everyone knows them. So if you learn them you’ll be ahead of most players.
Betting aggressively is one of the most important Holdem tactics there is. You’ve got a snowballs chance in hell of winning at Texas Hold Em Poker if you do not play at least a mediocre aggressive game. I reckon you can tell how good a player will do playing Texas Hold Em poker online or land-based just by watching how aggressive they are.
But playing aggressively isn’t just throwing all your chips in the pot any chance you get. You need to balance this delicately with what you can actually afford to bet, or afford to lose. Without betting aggressively correctly you may do alright for a while but that one bad hand will occur and you’ll be out on the street.
Holdem Tactics You Need To Know #2 Stealing Blinds From The Cutoff
If anyone was ever to survive without utilising aggressive Holdem tactics constantly the only way I can imagine is by stealing blinds from the cutoff. This is one of the best Holdem tactics to use and it’s completely allowed within the Texas Hold Em rules.
To help you take it up a notch, you just don’t have to bet a bunch of money in late position to steal the blinds. Well, this actually does work, but in higher-end games you will want to take a bit more into consideration.
- Are any tight players in the pot?
- What are the loose players doing?
- What’s your stack size compared to theirs? (their tactics are more likely to call you if you have a small stack)
- Is one of the people in the blind a blind defender? (probably most important)
Holdem Tactics You Need To Know #3 Playing Marginal Hands Properly
[see how the pocket fives completely destroyed a big slick (A-K suited).]
Marginal hands are the fun ones! This is one of my favourite Holdem tactics although it might not be the actual most profitable. I just really like taking a punt and having a mega hand drop. Even if it is only like one in 8 times (or worse).
But marginal hands are the ones that are usually peoples downfall. That’s why this Holdem Tactics doing it ‘properly’. It’s a slippery slope with these guys and you can soon find yourself in dire straights.
- Here’s a few Texas Hold Em tips to implementing these Holdem tactics correctly:
- DO NOT play them from blinds
- DO NOT play them from early positions
- Try not to have to bet too much pre-flop (but at the same time, I never just check/call through. I’ll always bet a little)
- If you don’t hit well on the flop, pass
- Don’t chase gut-shot straights
Holdem Tactics You Need To Know #4 Going All-in and Calling All-ins
Holdem Tactics like going all-in are the tactics that really make a game of Hold Em! What sort of Texas Hold Em Poker game wouldn’t have a gut-wrenching all-in, or a even more worrying call of an all-in? The No Limit Texas Hold Em Poker rules allow this kind of play which is wicked because all-ins are great.
But unless you feel like going down the drain in all about 5 seconds don’t all-in too regularly. Try to all-in when you practically have the deal sealed. When the odds are so stacked in your favour it really is viable. Don’t punt with all-ins. Save them for the surefire (well, close to surefire) draws or plays.
And when you call all-ins, make sure you’ve actually got a leg to stand on before you do. Usually players have something very decent when they all-in (except for the random cowboy) so you should actually have something good too if you are going to call.
Holdem Tactics You Need To Know #5 Creating Bad Pot odds For Other Players
Pots odds are some of the harder Holdem Tactics to do but if you can master this area of Texas Hold Em you’ll be ahead of 99% of everyone else (on that point, checkout these Texas Holdem Secrets to be ahead of almost everyone). The best way to learn is to get a calculator and do the sums until you can start doing this in your head and then on the fly.
Understanding pots odds firstly benefits you because you know when you should call, or bet, or play at a pot, and most importantly when to fold. But manipulating pot odds for other players are really advanced Holdem tactics and is even more lucrative.
A great Texas Holdem strategy is to manipulate pot odds for other players to make them enter a pot or fold. Of course, this only works if they are also advanced and understand pot odds and outs so it doesn’t quite work on newer players.
For example, some great Holdem tactics are to increase a pot to be quite large so that a player with a smaller stack can’t afford to enter unless he has very good cards. Another one is you could ensure the pot remains small enough so that a player chasing a flush draw shouldn’t call because his return wouldn’t make it worth it.
