National Pub Poker League – 5 Tips To Focus On Your Game

Its easy to lose focus when playing poker at the National Pub Poker League. There are so many distractions that change your state so easily. Read on for 5 top tips for keeping your focus when playing poker at the NPPL.

Keeping Your Focus At The National Pub Poker League

Pubs! Food, Booze, Music, Sports, Women (sometimes), and POKER! All the good things in life. Pubs are a great place. They are always holding ‘poker nights’ where you can go and have a feed, grab a drink and play a bit of poker. Now, some pubs have tied into the National Pub Poker League so the poker night and tournaments they held are recognized.

I know that some of you who are reading this already know how to play holdem, others are still learning the game and some of you have already developed your own play style and skills but are still struggling to consistently win. Whoever you are, I’m sure that you, like me, want to discover the tips for keeping your focus at the National Pub Poker League. That’s why you’re investing your time wisely by reading these tips.

#1 – Don’t Eat Too Much

Be careful what and how much you eat. If you eat a high carbohydrate meal before you play poker your energy will be used for digesting this food. Do you ever eat a big spaghetti and meatballs meal and then get really tired? That’s you body focusing on digesting that massive amount of complex carbohydrates. All you have to really do is skip the potatoes with your meal and avoid pasta dishes. Just have a steak and veg without the baked potato and you’ll be fine.

#2 – Don’t Drink Too Much

Alcohol – friend to many, foe to more. Your welcome to have a drink or two at the pub, why else are you there? (the poker, derr!) Just be sure not to get too drunk. You senses will be dulled, your cognitive processes not doing their best, and your normal risk averse stance simply goes out the window. You’ll feel like you can take on the world and it will show in your poker game. The problem is you’ll get trampled by good players. When you’re drunk its easy to make mistakes so keep a lid on it.

#3 – Factor In Ciggies And The Dunny

If you smoke you need to factor this in. If you can smoke at the table this isn’t a problem but if you can’t you’ll have to make sure your nicotine is up for your poker game. You don’t want to get edgy and stressed. Have a few before incase you’re in for a long poker game. Same goes for the dunny. If you’re drinking a lot make sure the empty the tank before you start playing so you don’t get uncomfortable and stressed at the crucial end parts of a long game.

#4 – Block Out Music And Sounds

Most pubs play music very loud. They often turn it town a bit for the National Pub Poker League but I often find its still quite loud. You need to learn to block this out. Also, what I found is more louder is the people (damn people…) Just girls having a conversation and laughing, the blokes at the pool table or even waiters dropping or clanging glasses. Being able to block out these sounds and concentrate on the game will help you play better.

#5 – Play The Best Damn Poker You Can

Often players go to the pub to have a relaxing time and they’ll play a little poker. They’ll get drunk, they’ll get distracted and take dangerous punts just because they are there to have fun. This is fine if you want to be a mediocre poker player and lose money. But if you want to win every time you sit down at the table you have to be switched on and playing the best poker you can. Focusing on the game, playing properly, sticking to your own personal rules and never compromising on your integrity will ensure you are successful both at the National Pub Poker League and in all poker as a whole.
