The first thing to do is compare your pre-flop bet to the size of the blind. Instead of working from a certain number work from a ratio to the blind size.
Three times the big blind is 3xbb, four times the big blind is 4xbb, five times the big blind is 5xbb, and so it goes. If you are betting over 5xbb this is considered a large bet.

But, another important factor is the table average. By watching how much other players bet pre-flop you can take a table pre-flop bet average.
If the tables average pre-flop bet is 6xbb well than a 5xbb raise from you is no longer too much. A normal table average is about 2.5xbb so usually a 5xbb raise is quite a lot.
